JTBA Sport Challenge (September 30, 2007)

The fourth JTBA Event of the 07-08 Season rolled into the beautiful Cedar Lanes in Sandusky on September 30th, and after a long grueling day, two veterans were left standing as our Sport Challenge Champions. We’d like to thank the Sortino family, as well as the entire Greentree Complex for their hospitality throughout the weekend. Special thanks to Randy Hart, JTBA Lane Maintenance Director, and Cedar Lanes Manager for his hard work in making this event happen.

The morning started off with a 6 game qualifying block contested on a shorter 37 foot Sport Bowling Pattern. Michigan State’s Scott Honeysett paced the men’s field for the morning block, finishing at +86. On the ladies side, it was Heidi Sanders, Fremont OH leading at -13. The field was then cut to the top ½ of the field (32 boys and 6 girls). Cut scores were -135 for the boys, and -165 for the girls.

After lunch, the remaining 38 players were tested by a longer 44 foot Sport Bowling Pattern, in another 6 game block. At the conclusion, Abed Daher of Brownstown MI was left standing as the tournament leader on the boys side at +98, while Joy Arrigo held the girls lead heading into our stepladder finals, which would feature an interesting “pick your pattern” format, with the high seed receiving choice of the fresh short, or long patterns for their matches. In the boys stepladder it was Paul Benedict of Wyandotte, MI upsetting the number four seeded Colin Sikes of Canton MI 218-170 on the short pattern. Next up it was the number 3 seeded Jon Schiller of Milford MI defeating Benedict 226-216, also on the short pattern. Number 2 seed Scott Honeysett chose to move the action to the long pattern, but Schiller rose to the occasion defeating him 222-194, setting up an exciting championship match with Daher. Daher chose to bowl on the long pattern, and after a back and forth championship match, Daher had the opportunity to double in the tenth to win the title. After striking on the first shot, a nine pin stood on the second, handing Schiller his second career JTBA title 221-220, as well as the $550 first place scholarship.

On the ladies side, it was four seeded Heidi Sanders who ran the ladder, defeating 3 seed Adileen Pointer in match #1 on the short pattern, 221-177. Sanders then dispatched Mary Wells of Westerville OH 173-163. This set up an all Wright State title match, with Sanders getting the best of Arrigo 179-167 on the long pattern, to claim the title.Heidi SandersHeidi Sanders

Our next event will be October 14th in Columbus at Tim Voss’ Sequoia Pro Bowl, the PBA Tours Columbus home. Qualifying will begin at 9am for the Isaly’s Open. Additionally, we’d like to welcome NetServ Group LLC as our newest sponsor. Netserv will be serving as the title sponsor of our April event in Columbus. We hope to see everyone in Columbus for our second Isaly’s event of the year!
